Article 1 The University grants the Bachelor's, Master's, Doctor's and Professional degree.

Article 2 The University shall grant the Bachelor's degree to a candidate who is certified to have completed all the requirements of an academic program pursuant to Article 32 Paragraph 1 of General Rules of Nagoya University (General Rules No.1 of 2004) and shall note a following name of a degree subject in the degree record according to classification of schools or departments.

Article 3 In addition to the grant of a degree under the provision of Paragraph 2 of the preceding article, the University may grant a doctoral degree on a candidate when the candidate submits a Ph.D. dissertation to the Graduate School and successfully passes the examination and the public defense of dissertation and when the University confirms that the candidate has an equal or greater academic ability than a person who has completed the Doctoral Program.

Article 4 In accordance with Article 34 Paragraph 2 of General Rules of the Graduate School, the University may grant a Master's degree on a candidate who has studied for more than two years in the doctoral program of the Graduate School that does not distinguish the two-year Master's Program and the three-year Doctoral Program and has fulfilled the conditions prescribed in Article 31 of General Rules of the Graduate School.

Article 5 A student in the programs of the Graduate School shall submit a thesis to the Dean, after having taken courses determined by each Graduate School, having earned prescribed number of credits and having received necessary supervision.

Article 6 A candidate who applies for a degree pursuant to Article 3 shall submit the application form that designates the type of degree to the President with a thesis, curriculum vitae and degree examination fee, after the faculty meeting in the graduate school or the committee (hereinafter referred to as "faculty meeting in the graduate school, etc") to which the faculty meeting in the graduate school delegates the degree examination approves the submission of the thesis.

Article 7 A candidate shall submit one major thesis. The candidate for doctor's degree shall submit three copies of dissertation and summary respectively and the candidate for master's degree shall submit one copy of master's thesis. When it is necessary, the candidate may submit other papers for reference.

Article 8 Submitted thesis and paid degree examination fee shall not be returned.

Article 9 When a faculty meeting in the graduate school, etc. accepts a dissertation, the faculty meeting in the graduate school, etc. shall organize a degree examination committee that consists of two or more professors including a supervisor.

Article 10 A degree examination committee shall complete the examination within one year after accepting a dissertation; provided, however, that where special circumstances exist, the term may be extended by the decision of a faculty meeting in the graduate school, etc.

Article 11 The examination will be held in a written or an oral format after the review of the thesis.

Article 12 The degree examination committee must report the result of the examination to the faculty meeting in the graduate school ,etc.; provided however, in case of doctoral degree examination, the summary of the examination shall be noticed in writing.

Article 13 The director of a graduate school shall report to the president the person who passed a degree examination within 20 days from the date of the decision of acceptance. In this case, for the person who passed the doctoral degree examination, the director shall attach two copies of the thesis and one copy of the summary of the thesis, summary of the result of the review and examination, and curriculum vitae respectively.

Article14 The president shall grant the relevant degree to a candidate who is certified to have completed all the requirements of an academic program that the department provides based on the report of the dean of the faculty, and to a candidate who has passed a degree examination, based on the report of the director of the graduate school.

Article 15 A person who is granted a degree shall print and publish the academic dissertation within one year; provided however, that this shall not apply to the dissertation printed and published prior to the grant of degree.

Article 16 When a person who is granted the Master's, Doctor's or Professional degree falls under any of the following items, the president shall, following deliberation in the Education and Research Council, rescind the degree granted to the person;

Article 17 The amount of degree examination fee prescribed in Article 6 shall be the amount provided for in the Regulation concerning the School Fees of Nagoya University (Regulation No.87 of 2004.)

Article 18 In addition to what is provided for in this regulation, necessary matters concerning the review of dissertation and examination shall be governed by each graduate school.
